European Year of Rail

To shine a light on one of the most sustainable, innovative and safest transport modes we have, the European Union declared 2021 the 'European Year of Rail'! Throughout the year, the EU plans various activities to put the benefits of rail transport in the spotlight. The initiative is part of the European Green Deal, aiming to achieve a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050.

To boost rail transport, the European Commission has already implemented a number of actions including 2016’s Fourth Railway Package which begins full implementation in 2021, the Single European Railway Area and the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking.

This year, the Commission will launch a proposal on a new European Partnership for transforming Europe's rail system and an action plan to boost passenger rail transport. This will include measures to improve capacity and simplify ticketing across different transport modes to enable multimodality and increase the attractiveness of rail. Find out more about the European Year of Rail here!

UITP is proudly involved in various rail-focused European projects, funded by the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking.

Shift2MaaS

In 2019, UITP launched Shift2MaaS, a project that tests so-called Shift2Rail ‘IP4 technologies’ developed by other projects in the real world, to advance the uptake of MaaS schemes. Currently, Shift2MaaS is in the final stages of the project and a Final Event will be organised on 22 June.

IP4MaaS

The IP4MaaS project is the follow-up of Shift2MaaS. Also coordinated by UITP, IP4MaaS will further test the technologies developed under IP4, such as a ticket booking system or a journey planner.

RIDE2RAIL

The RIDE2RAIL project aims to develop solutions and tools that will facilitate the efficient combination of ride-sharing and scheduled transport services such as bus and rail.
